Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya was started by the Government of India as per National Education Policy 1986. The concept of residential schools in each of the districts was revealed under the 'New Education Policy' 1986. The first such schools were opened for use, at present (as on 31.03.2019) the total number of these schools has increased to 661.
Presently Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya operates in 27 states and 8 union territories. It is a co-educational residential school, which is fully funded by the Government of India through an autonomous organization 'Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti'. Admission to Navodaya Vidyalaya is done in class 6 through 'Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). The medium of instruction in these schools up to class 8 is mother tongue or regional language. But the medium for mathematics and science is English, and the medium for social science is Hindi. Students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya appear in the Central Board of Secondary Education examinations of class 10 and 12. Each Navodaya Vidyalaya is a co-educational residential institution that provides free boarding and lodging to students, free school uniforms, text books, stationery, and fro rail and bus fares. However, a nominal fee (excluding exempted class students and all girl students) is charged to Rs. 600 / - per month from the students of classes 9 to 12 as school development fund. 1500 / - per month is charged from the students whose parents do any government job.
Entrance examinations
Admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas is mainly for children from rural areas, with at least 75% seats available for rural children. Seats are reserved for children belonging to SC and ST communities in the district in proportion to their population but not below the national average. 1/3 of the seats are filled by girl students. 3% seats are for children with disabilities. For admission, entrance test is conducted for the students of class 5, for which the application process is online, the applicant should be a candidate of class 5. 80 students are selected from each district.
Promote national unity
Navodaya Vidyalayas aim to inculcate the values of national integration through migration scheme. Migration is an inter-regional exchange of students between Hindi and non-Hindi speaking districts for one academic year in Class-IX. Efforts are made to promote better understanding of unity in diversity and to develop and promote understanding of rich cultural heritage through various activities.
Application forms have been released for admission in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in class 6 in session 2021. After the application process, the written examination for admission will be held on April 10, 2021 at 11:30 am. This exam is known as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test i.e. JNVST 2021.
